I'm tickled to be performing for the fourth time at this festival, and not only for the food! It's held in the "land of my ancestors" (some of them, anyway) and since I've felt the pull of genealogy, Marion County has become a special place for me. Hey, I don't have kids, so I have to brag about my dead ancestors instead! I'll be sharing a song about one, in fact, who is the patriarch of one of the families who settled in the county long ago, so keep an ear out for "The Ballad of Alexander Kelly.
"

The phenomenal Briana Murphy will be joining me on fiddle. She makes all my songs sound legit.

You may have seen Amber in the film Cowgirls 'N' Angels playing the singer (hello, typecasting) in the dance scene, or heard her on the radio. Bill D is one of her usual cowriters and has often joined her on stage and on the road; his work has earned him some impressive accolades.

This will be a special night to celebrate and/or mourn (depending on how I feel at the time) my impending 50th birthday, and also 12 years in Nashville. Featuring an all-star (or, mostly-star at least) lineup of writers who've meant a lot to me and who happened to be available on relatively short notice to play for free. The menu is excellent and affordable, the parking is plentiful, and the atmosphere is casual and friendly. So come early, eat a bite and enjoy! If you insist on giving a gift, a couple of bucks in the tip jar (along with actual advice on how to deal with being over 50) will more than suffice.

I've never been to Texas (outside the Dallas-Ft. Worth airport) but entering this very cool restaurant makes me feel like I've stepped into a saloon in the heart of the Lone Star State (minus the spittin' and shootin'). Owner Nikki Mitchell (ask her about Waylon) & crew serve up tasty American cuisine. I recommend the barbecue.

I'm very excited to be playing here again, especially because I'll be joined by some fantastic talent:

Kim McLean's songs are full of the spiritual wisdom and gentle humor of a woman who is living a life and learning its lessons. Her many musical credentials include a Dove Award, a duet with Dolly Parton and cuts by countless artists. She describes her style as "Appalachi-Groove."

Charlsey Etheridge offers a blend of folk, pop and blues reminiscent of Sheryl Crow with a nod to Billie Holiday. When she is not on stage herself, she is a fulltime music teacher, helping encourage future performers.

Trust me, there's only so much leftover turkey, football and family togetherness a person can take...so on the Saturday after Thanksgiving, you'll need a place to go where NOBODY knows your name.  Or even if they do, it's OK, because everyone will be listening to the music too intently to bother you with any personal questions.  Or, hey, bring the family with you, whatever.

This little family restaurant serves up American cuisine (known to locals as "vittles" or just plain good eatin') and hosts the occasional Nashville notable on stage.  I look forward to playing the role as one of the latter.

Charlsey Etheridge and I will be joining the many artists performing at this funky spiritual arts and crafts festival, celebrating the work of the late Rev. Howard Finster. His primitive visionary folk art has been enjoyed worldwide. Bands including Talking Heads and R.E.M. have featured his work on album covers you've probably seen. Even if you download mp3's instead of the old-fashioned way of purchasing your music on a disk in a store, like a normal person. See www.finstersparadisegardens.org

Pat Terry's songs and presentation are sometimes quirky, sometimes poignant, but always compelling.  He is one of my musical heroes from way back, and I am far from alone in that.

He is well known to many from his days in the Pat Terry Group, who were part of the first wave of contemporary Christian music, a.k.a. "Jesus Music," in the 70's.  Some know him for his hard-hitting, hard-rocking solo work from the 80's.   Still others know his work from the liner notes of some very successful artists, as he eventually made a name for himself in the Nashville country market as a songwriter.   His credits include hit songs performed by Sammy Kershaw, Tanya Tucker, Alan Jackson, B.J. Thomas, John Anderson and more.

Pat's latest work is as good as anything he's ever done, which is saying a LOT.

Performing at the home of college (and Facebook) friend and thinker/speaker (good combo) Doug Floyd.

My "closing" act (!) will be none other than Pat Terry.   Pat is one of my musical heroes from way back, and I am far from alone in that.  He is well known to many from his days in the Pat Terry Group, who were part of the first wave of contemporary Christian music, a.k.a. "Jesus Music," in the 70's.  I discovered his music in the 80's while co-hosting  a program of progressive Christian music on college radio station WUTK.  By this time he had gone solo and his music was less likely to fit the mold of the CCM market; his lyrics were more introspective, less overtly "religious" in some cases, but artistically and spiritually better than ever.  He eventually made a name for himself in the Nashville country market as a songwriter, with credits such as "National Working Woman's Holiday," sung by Sammy Kershaw.  Pat has a new self-produced CD of  songs that touch all the bases and head for home.

Reservations requested but not required.  Bring a lawn chair (or bean bag, if you prefer...but keep in mind, this is an outdoor thing in August).

Saturday, October 18, 2008
7 pm Central time  (8 pm Eastern)
A celebration of family heritage, both earthly and spiritual, with my mom, Elizabeth Hall, as special guest.  She plays a mean piano (and a nice one, too).

Recently I've been researching my family roots--some would say it's become an obsession, others...would agree.  Anway, I started with some old pictures and documents left by my maternal grandmother and have discovered some really interesting people so far.   Many were residents of Marion County, TN, a beautiful area between Monteagle Mountain and Chattanooga (notable to travelers for its highly-visible fireworks emporiums adjacent to the highway and, I suspect, visible from the stratosphere).  I found my great-grandfather's grave next to a quaint little church building and as it turns out, the pastor is as much a genealogy nut--er, enthusiast--as I've become, so we've cooked up this event.

Make a day of it and get the most for your travel dollar!  Go to Ketner's Mill Country Arts Fair   and, if you're into vintage farm equipment, Days of Yesteryear, during the day, and then come by the church afterwards for a relaxed evening of music and fellowship.

Oak Grove Cumberland Presbyterian Church
Griffith Highway (TN 27) just south of Ketner's Mill, Whitwell, TN 37397
Free admission

Directions:
From I-24, take exit 155 to TN 28; go 8.7 miles
Turn right onto Ketner's Mill Road; go 2.6 miles
Turn right onto TN 27; the church will be on your left after a mile or so.

Despite the fact that I'm neither a hippie NOR a chick, and despite the lack of twang in my music (no complaints so far), I'm participating in this fine monthly series of writers nights featuring "positive music for women." I'm definitely in favor of all three of THOSE. And, if you ask most guys why they do music, the honest ones will say "Positively, for the women." So it all make sense.

Opening for Tia McGraff
Admission: Suggested donation of $10

Now THIS is the way to celebrate Mother's Day...but you better buy some flowers or a card or somethin' as a backup.

Charles & Myrtle's Coffeehouse regularly provides an intimate living-room type setting (probably because it's in what used to be a living room), for acoustic performances by top-notch artists. But they're letting me play there anyway.  Great place to go after dinner at Provino's or before a late-night breakfast at the IHOP.

Charles & Myrtle's Coffeehouse

Christ Unity Church, 105 McBrien Rd., Chattanooga, TN

Opening for Joni Bishop
Admission: Suggested donation of $10

But they're letting me play there anyway.  Great place to go after dinner at Provino's or before a late-night breakfast at the IHOP.

Joni Bishop writes and performs songs that soothe the soul and stimulate the imagination.  She uses vivid imagery to paint pictures of beauty, loss and redemption...I suppose it only makes sense that she is also a visual artist who likes to portray her musical heroes on canvas.

Post-concert note: Creativity was ricocheting off the walls!   But not with undue irreverence, of course.

Late September thru early October
Mission trip to Cape Town, South Africa

READ THE TEAM BLOG TO FIND OUT WHAT WE DID, HOW IT WENT, ETC.

I think this pic from Karen's website may be a tad outdated

Saturday, September 10, 2005
7 pm*
House concert

Featured artists:
Karen Staley
("Take Me As I Am," "Keeper of the Stars")
and
Wayland Patton
("Land Of The Living," "Turn It On, Turn It Up, Turn Me Loose")

I'm pleased, privileged and slightly perplexed at my good fortune, as I'll be hosting these two wonderful songwriters.

Karen is compulsively funny which only adds to her performance.  She'll no doubt be full of stories about her August gigs at Sundance with the other Women In the Round (Pam Tillis, Tricia Walker & Ashley Cleveland).   Or she can tell us how it feels to hear your songs sung by people like Faith, Reba, or Dolly...or George Jones, Conway Twitty, Kathy Mattea, Tracy Byrd, Lee Ann Rimes, Patty Loveless, or Jeff & Sheri Easter.  But she's not a name-dropper like me, so she'll probably just sing the songs.

Wayland is an award-winning hit songwriter whose songs have found audiences in the U.S. and abroad. Artists who have contributed to--and shared in--his success include Pam Tillis ("Land Of The Living"), Dwight Yoakam ("Turn It On, Turn It Up, Turn Me Loose"), George Strait, Dolly Parton, and Ricky Skaggs. Skaggs is a "repeat customer" who made "Something In My Heart" into a #1 single. Wayland's work has also found its way to the contemporary Christian market ("This Is What Love Looks Like" - Carolyn Arends).

And
because it's my birthday I'll most likely celebrate my joy (or drown my sorrows, depending) in song, possibly joined by a friend or family member or two...just to get the sound system warmed up.

*Be early, if you want to get in on the door prizes (which, rumor has it, will include tickets to a certain radio broadcast that has featured country music, old and new, for about 80 years now, all in a "grand" fashion).

(don't worry, I don't do polkas)

Thursday, August 26, 2004
8 pm
In the round with the very talented Heather Morgan and Monica Spendlove.
THIS JUST IN: Heather couldn't make it out of Texas in time to do the round ('s'a big state, y'know) so Troy Underwood will be there instead.  He's a good 'ern, too.

Heather Morgan will make you wonder if there might just be something behind all that braggin'  Texans tend to do (d'j'ever notice?).  Amy Grant said Heather is reminiscent of Patty Griffin and Dolly Parton; husband Vince agreed (always a wise choice).  Sure I'm name-dropping...but aren't you more interested now?  Come on, admit it!   Thought so.

Monica Spendlove is a "fresh face" on the music scene in Nashville, having moved within the past year or so from Utah to develop both her craft and a taste for fried food (or something like that).   No Osmond names to drop here; you'll just have to take my word (for now) that she's talented.

Various rounds featuring the attendees of the very first NSAI Christian Songwriters Retreat (Aug.14).

This evening will prove that "the early bird gets the mike," as a variety of folks in town for Saturday's  retreat will be performing.  Perhaps some of them will give a sneak peek at some of the songs that will be grilled and/or lauded in critiques by the pro writers and publishers at the retreat.  Make sure you applaud loudly...they may need the encouragement later!

Beth is an accomplished singer-songwriter with a truly charming stage presence.   She's a familiar figure on the contemporary folk scene, and is turning her Texas eyes (and her songwriting skills) to Nashville for new ground to conquer (in a really nice way).   I'm thrilled and honored to be a part of this round. I've put together another round with a couple of  Nashville's newest songwriters in town (not far behind me, time-wise...though age-wise, perhaps a different story).  Caffeine is STILL just down the street from the runaround--I mean roundabout.      Park across Demonbreun in the lot of the old Shoney's.

7 pm - 8 pm
In the round at Barbara Cloyd's new writers night
with Dani Carroll and Terry Thompson

I have almost as much fun putting together a round as actually doing it.   I'll be very pleased to share the stage with singer/songwriters Dani Carroll and Terry Thompson.  Dani is a writer with Famous Music here in town, and anyone who is not captivated by her performance is advised to get their ears AND eyes checked, assuming they have a pulse.  Terry also knows his way around a song and back again; see www.terrythompson.net for more info on him.

OK, so it ain't the Grand Ole Opry, but it's a pleasant atmosphere and there's PLENTY of parking available, along with a fine selection of value-oriented cuisine.  Come on by and let me wish you a merry Christmas in song.

This year I have the lovely and talented (once again, some cliches are also true) Dani Carroll helping to spread the cheer (and give my guitar-calloused fingers a rest).

My first-acquired gig as a new Nashville native!  Pretty exciting.  I had heard about Sip of Seattle, but I was really just looking for a decent & cheap place to eat near the NSAI office when I stumbled across this place, in the Music Row area.  Not only did I have a great lunch, I got a booking, and a job tip!  Speaking of tips: plan to have dinner before or during this show.  And save room for a post-dinner coffee, latte, smoothie, or some other beverage that makes a lot of noise when prepared (please order after my set is over, IF you don't mind).

This is an all-night marathon walk to "celebrate survivorship, remember those who lost their lives to cancer, and raise money for the fight against cancer."  The infield of the stadium becomes an overnight festival area, with entertainment, karaoke, all sorts of stuff happening.  Late at night there is a very moving candle ceremony in which the names of loved ones lost to cancer are read.  Come and hang out as long as you like, bring a frisbee, picnic, whatever...and enjoy a different view of your community.

Charles' & Myrtle's Coffeehouse regularly provides an intimate living-room type setting (probably because it's in what used to be a living room), for acoustic performances by top-notch artists such as Pierce Pettis, Jennifer Daniels, and Beth Wood...and I'm privileged to be in such good company.

E-mail Debby Wilson for info: Melodyz4U@aol.com
7 pm
$10 admission--reservations required

As much as I enjoy the glamor and excitement of the stage...the clubs, the amphitheaters, the auditoriums, the stadiums (cough?)--er, the places musicians normally play in public--it's nice to relax and just play for friends--as long as they listen.  And what better place than at an actual friend's house?

I'm opening for Barbara Cloyd, a songwriter ("I Guess You Had To Be There", Lorrie Morgan) and talent wrangler for the famous open mic nights at the Bluebird Cafe in Nashville.  She not only has a great sense of humor, she's also a great encourager.  She's the kind of treasure that a songwriter hopes to find in Nashville--an expert who is not only able, but also willing, to help any songwriter who is a) bold enough to step on stage and b) humble enough to accept instruction.  Can't wait to hear her!

Guess which one is the Secret Service agent? Ah, sorry, can't tell you; if I told you, I'd have to...well, you know.

Friday, October 5-7, 2001 -   Fellowship of Christian Peace Officers Annual Conference
Simpsonwood Conference Center, Norcross, GA

I'm privileged to have been asked to lead worship music and to do original songs for this gathering of law officers and their families from all over the U.S.

Post-event note:  This was a great weekend!  I always feel a little "out of my element" hanging out with law enforcement folks; other than being a law-abiding citizen and an occasional viewer of TV's "Cops," I don't know much about their world--I've never even fired a gun!   But the focus was on faith and not handcuffing techniques, and these guys (and gals) made me feel at ease right away--especially the Secret Service agent who was looking forward to a DC Talk concert in town!  Other than some "remedial rhythm" lessons (clap on TWO and FOUR, y'all--this ain't no march!), they were a good bunch of sing-alongers.

Friday, August 31 to Monday, Sept. 3, 2001 - Singles Labor Day Retreat

Get the CD at Anita's site!

Friday, August 24, 2001 - Live recording of "Come Away"
New Salem Baptist Church, Kennesaw, GA
I'll be singing in the choir on a live recording of a praise & worship album by my friend Anita Renfroe, about whom I believe the phrase "she's a hoot" was coined. Come and sing along in the audience--but please don't be yelling "Freebird" to get on the recording.  Anita has also granted me the privilege of doing one of my own songs during the intermission--so just hold in 'til I'm through singing, all right?!
